Job Overview
The Quantum Computing Research Engineer will join IBM South Africa’s Advanced Computing department to design, develop, and test quantum algorithms, hardware interfaces, and software tools that advance IBM’s quantum portfolio. Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement quantum algorithms targeting optimization, simulation, and machine learning applications.
- Develop and maintain software libraries and toolkits for quantum programming languages such as Qiskit.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate quantum control electronics and improve qubit fidelity.
- Conduct experimental validation of quantum circuits on IBM’s quantum hardware and simulators.
- Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
- Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the growth of the quantum research community in South Africa.
Required Skills
- Deep understanding of quantum mechanics, quantum information theory, and quantum error correction.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with quantum SDKs (e.g., Qiskit, Cirq).
- Strong background in algorithm design and complexity analysis.
- Experience with high‑performance computing and parallel programming.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a track record of innovative research.
- Effective communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Education
A Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Candidates with a strong research portfolio, including publications in quantum computing or related areas, will be given priority.
Experience

Salary
