Job Overview

The Artificial Intelligence Ethics Officer will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of ethical AI policies and practices across FirstRand’s digital platforms. Reporting to the Head of Compliance, the officer will work closely with data scientists, product managers, legal counsel, and senior leadership to embed ethical considerations into AI lifecycle stages—from data collection and model training to deployment and post‑implementation monitoring. This role is pivotal in ensuring that FirstRand’s AI initiatives comply with local regulations, international standards, and the bank’s own ethical commitments, thereby safeguarding customer trust and mitigating reputational risk.

As part of the broader compliance function, the officer will also serve as an internal advisor on emerging AI regulations, such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and forthcoming AI‑specific legislation. Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and continuously improve FirstRand’s AI Ethics Framework, aligning it with global best practices and local regulatory requirements.
• Conduct ethical risk assessments for AI projects, identifying potential biases, fairness concerns, and privacy implications.
• Collaborate with data science and product teams to embed ethical guidelines into model design, data sourcing, and algorithmic decision‑making processes.
• Provide training and awareness programs for staff on AI ethics, responsible AI use, and regulatory compliance.
• Monitor AI systems post‑deployment to detect unintended outcomes, bias drift, or compliance breaches, and recommend corrective actions.
• Serve as the primary liaison with regulators, industry bodies, and external auditors on AI‑related matters.
• Prepare and present ethical AI reports to senior leadership and the board, highlighting risk mitigation strategies and compliance status.
• Lead incident response for AI‑related ethical concerns, ensuring timely investigation and remediation.

Required Skills

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Ethics, Law, Philosophy, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) in AI ethics, technology policy, or related fields are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in AI governance, compliance, risk management, or a related role within the financial services sector. Prior experience in a banking environment, especially in regulatory compliance or data ethics, is preferred.

Salary

The annual compensation range for this position is between R600,000 and R900,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses and comprehensive benefits.
