Job Overview

The Strategic Mine Development Analyst will play a pivotal role in evaluating, planning, and optimizing new and existing mining projects within BHP’s South African portfolio. Reporting to the Head of Strategic Development, the analyst will conduct comprehensive feasibility studies, market analysis, and risk assessments to guide investment decisions. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed feasibility studies for new mine development projects, including resource estimation, cost modeling, and profitability analysis.
  • Perform market and commodity price forecasting to assess the economic viability of mining initiatives.
  • Collaborate with geologists, engineers, and environmental specialists to integrate technical data into strategic plans.
  • Develop comprehensive risk assessments, including operational, regulatory, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) risks.
  • Prepare and present investment proposals and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and board committees.
  • Monitor and evaluate ongoing project performance against key performance indicators (KPIs) and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Support the development of long‑term mine life plans, ensuring alignment with BHP’s sustainability targets.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies that could impact mining operations in South Africa.

Required Skills

  • Advanced analytical and quantitative skills with proficiency in financial modeling tools (e.g., Excel, VBA, Power BI).
  • Strong understanding of mining engineering principles, geology, and resource estimation.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, capable of influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies and risk assessment frameworks.

Education

Experience

Minimum of five years of experience in mine planning, feasibility analysis, or strategic development within the mining sector. Experience with large‑scale projects, capital budgeting, and stakeholder management in South Africa is highly preferred.

Salary
